Born of Fire:
A Mythological Tribute
-
Introducing our first-ever Mythological Creature Competition—a tribute to the strength, spirit, and stories that have emerged from our community in the wake of the recent fires.
Artists are invited to sculpt mythological beings rooted in the themes of fire, water, destruction, and rebirth—echoing the transformation that Pasadena and surrounding areas have endured. From dragons to phoenixes, sea spirits to fire gods, each participant will choose a creature from a curated list drawn from global folklore.
This competition is more than just a creative challenge—it’s a reflection of what it means to rise, reimagine, and rebuild through art.Entry fee: $10. Winner takes the entire pot plus an extra 100$ from GBC!
Mug requirements: Craft a vessel that defies convention! It must hold 4oz of liquid, feature some form of handle, and have a challenging drinking aperture.
This promises to be a riot! Every event attendee can cast their vote for their favorite "undrinkable" mug.
Open participation invites everyone - members, students, staff, instructors, neighbors, friends, kids, family, literally everyone - to join in the fun.
-
In the Mythological Creature Competition, the sky’s the limit. Your creature can be wheel-thrown, hand-built, sculpted, carved—or any combination that brings your vision to life. This is your opportunity to explore the wild, the ancient, the symbolic, and the strange—through clay. We’ve curated a list of mythological creatures from cultures around the world, each tied to themes of fire, water, destruction, transformation, and rebirth.
You can view the full list [HERE]. Please choose one creature that inspires you and write your name next to it on the list to reserve it.Each participant will receive a note card with the name of their chosen mythological creature (artist names will NOT be on the notecard - it’ll be anonymous!), which will be displayed alongside their piece during the event. We strongly encourage you to write an artist statement to accompany your work—share your process, why you chose the creature, how it connects to the theme, or anything else you'd like the audience to know.
If you need firing services, we’re happy to help! We offer two options:

Gallery Show:
Echoes of the Flame
-
“Echoes of the Flame” is a gallery exhibition born from the ashes — featuring ceramic works that were either salvaged from the recent fires or created in response to them. Each piece tells a story of resilience: some were found buried in soot, others were unintentionally finished by the fire itself, and many stand as reflections on what it means to begin again.
This show is a tribute to our community’s endurance, the unpredictable nature of transformation, and the beauty that can emerge from ruin. Displayed on bricks and debris collected from the wreckage itself, the works are not just about survival—they are about rebirth, remembrance, and the silent power of art to carry what words cannot.
Through these objects, we honor the hands that shaped them, the fires that tested them, and the spirit of a city that continues to create — even in the face of loss.
-
We are currently gathering pieces for Echoes of the Flame, and we need your help. If you or someone you know was affected by the recent fires and were able to salvage ceramic work from the wreckage, please reach out. We want to honor your story and share it with our community. Whether the piece is whole, cracked, singed, or barely recognizable—it matters. Every shard holds meaning. This exhibition is about more than clay—it’s about memory, resilience, and bearing witness through art.
Your story deserves to be seen, felt, and remembered.
