    • Three Day Workshop: Monday, March 31st through Wednesday, April 2nd

    • 10am to 4pm (12 participants)

    • 375$

    • If you decide to keep the work you made in the Advanced Throwing workshop, we will be happy to fire your work for you for an additional fee of $75. We will bisque fire and glaze fire and you will have full access to use our full range of cone10 glazes.

    • Description: In this 3-day workshop, Jose Mariscal will share his unique techniques and approach to creating a wide range of vessels on the wheel. Participants will explore advanced methods for throwing larger, more complex forms while refining their handwork for greater precision. This intensive workshop will focus on both wheel throwing and trimming with several demonstrations throughout.

    • Workshop overview: Each morning, Jose will introduce key techniques with an emphasis on efficiency and precision. The hands-on sessions will allow participants to practice these skills under Jose's supervision.

    • DAY ONE:
Focus on centering clay, making cylinders, and creating open and closed forms.

    • DAY TWO:
Exploring bowl, necks, and two-part pieces. Demonstrations of closed forms such as vases in different shapes. Trimming techniques to refine your pieces.

    • DAY THREE:
Finishing and trimming two-part pieces. Jose will give demonstrations on textured shapes, allowing students to experiment with various forms. Students will have time to work on their chosen forms, incorporating the techniques they've learned.

    • Friday, April 4th through Sunday, April 6th.

    • 10am to 4pm (12 participants)

    • $375

    • Students from Advanced Throwing Workshop will receive a $50 discount if they sign up for Crystalline Workshop.

    • All participants must bring 5-8 bowls or plates in porcelain or stoneware, biscued and ready to glaze. Jose will help participants decide which of your pieces will yield the best results.

    • Workshop Overview:
This workshop combines practical hands-on experience with in-depth technical discussions. Participants will formulate and apply basic crystalline glazes, followed by an exploration of the process behind creating their own unique crystalline glazes.

    • DAY ONE - PRACTICAL SESSION:
Formulation of crystalline glaze. Application of glaze to pieces. Proper application of alumina and setting up pedistals for firing. Begin the first kiln firing.

    • DAY TWO - TECHNICAL PRESENTATION:
Firing schedules and temperature control. Theory of crystallization: how and at what temperatures do crystals form? Overview of electric vs. gas firing (oxidation), reduction firing in gas kilns, and post-reduction techniques. Explanation of frits: how they work and which ones are best for crystalline glazes. Tips for achieving optimal results and avoiding common mistakes.

    • DAY 3 - RESULTS & ANALYSIS:
Unloading the kiln and separating pieces from pedestals. Analyzing results and discussing outcomes. Treatment with acids to alter final appearances. Introduction to using slips with pigments and formulating glazes for red backgrounds.

About
Jose M. Mariscal

Porcelain, with its fine texture, purity and whiteness, allows me to explore relationships between form and surface in a way that is more rewarding than with any other clay. Wheel-thrown vessel forms offer infinite opportunities for subtle variations, but my particular concern, while attempting to achieve harmony and balance in the work, is to express my feelings for the natural world. Skies, sea and landscapes, together with the multitude of flora are a constant source of wonder, inspiration and delight to me. The sea and the universe, especially, have fascinated me since I was a child. I find the perfection of crystalline glazes with the perfect amount of crystals between the background and the surface. My forms are classic and conservative. I can’t stop researching Crystalline glazes and I Love to experiment this technique in my gas kiln. The shape and the Crystals. The Crystals and the shape…. both are really important for me and I like to work with my wheel for hours and hours throwing and thinking about the final result once fired in my kiln. With the help of my wife I wrote some articles for “Revista Ceramica” and I conducted some workshops such as Dunedin, Tel Aviv, Pontevedra, The school of Ceramics of Manises ( Spain ) or throwing demos in all over Europe ( Aubagne, Gouda, Gmunden, Belgium….). And I hosted the 1st Crystalline Congress in La Bisbal ( Spain) in 2013. That Congress was a nice opportunity to meet great potters from all over the world.
