Sunday, March 6th, 2022
10am to 5pm

We are excited to announce another collaborative artist talk and live demonstration! This time featuring ceramicists Heidi Kreitchet and Gus Smith. You will learn about unorthodox ways of combining the wheel-thrown vessel and hand-built sculptural elements. This one day demonstration will consist of three components. Gus will demonstrate wheel-thrown pieces which include larger and traditional forms. Heidi will create sculptures with the extended pinch technique as well as show how she uses a pallet for creating her abstract sculptures along with her hand built attachments. The third component of this demonstration will bring the two styles together spontaneously, as Heidi alters and adorns Gus’s vessels, allowing the audience to see the origins of the collaborative collection. You don’t want to miss this!

About Heidi Kreitchet

Originally from Philadelphia, Heidi Kreitchet has been actively wood-firing sculpture for the past 25 years. Kreitchet received her BFA in ceramics from Northern Arizona University. From 2004 to 2006, Kreitchet was fortunate to assist renowned ceramic artist, Don Reitz, in Clarkdale, Arizona. By watching and absorbing Reitz’s skillful, hand building techniques, she was inspired to push her own ideas with clay. She completed an MFA at Utah State University under the guidance of John Neely and Dan Murphy. In 2011, Kreitchet was asked by David Armstrong, Founder of the American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA) to establish AMOCA Ceramics Studio in Pomona, CA. From 2011 to 2021, Kreitchet and her talented team had passionately built a thriving and energetic ceramics studio in Southern California. From 2016 to 2021, she established RxR Gallery at her live/work unit located at The Pomona Packing Plant. There she hosted many artists of all mediums. Currently Kreitchet is working full time as a studio artist in painting and sculpting. Kreitchet serves on the Advisory Board for The Reitz Ranch Center for Ceramic Arts.

About Gus Smith

Andrew ‘Augusta’ Smith is a multi-medium designer and artist based in Phoenix Arizona, primarily focused on ceramic vessels. Native to Edgefield County South Carolina, Augusta uses his background in production scale ceramics and traditional functional forms along with his engineering research discipline to produce wares ranging from precise, codependent vessels and tablewares, to brutalist expressionist sculpture, and many in-between. His current personal body of work focuses on soda fired surfaces on porcelain functional wares and stream of consciousness illustrations on functional forms. His expertise in materials and experimental processes assists him in bridging the gap between himself and artists of different disciplines, and his process combines elements of craft, art, research and design. His work has been exhibited around the country since his graduation in 2020, including the Strictly Functional Pottery National (PA), the Saratoga Clay Arts Center's 'Altered Atmospheres' show (NY), and Heidi Kreitchet's R&R Gallery (CA). Augusta's work is included in the collection of The American Museum of Ceramic Art (CA), and various private collections around the country. Augusta currently lives and works in Phoenix, Arizona as an artist, designer and bio-medical engineer, as well as the co-founder of Hands Eyes Mind, a small goods company.
