This 7-week course will focus on the production of cone 6 crystalline pottery from start to finish. This includes throwing your pieces and glaze catchers, attaching the piece to its catcher, glazing, firing with a controlled cooling schedule to develop and grow crystals, and the removal and finishing of the works. We will do this in two rounds of firing, allowing for everyone to have two chances at the process of crystalline glazing!

In addition to the making portion of this course, we will also be discussing how crystalline glaze functions, ideal surfaces for different results, food safety, experimental crystalline processes, and the risks and specifics of working with crystalline glazes. It is required that you have an intermediate skill level with wheel throwing, since this workshop focuses on wheel-based processes.

By the end of this class, you will have an understanding of the art of crystalline glazed ceramics, and will have your very own beautiful crystalline pieces to take home!

This class will be split into 2 rounds of making: One batch of work made and glazed in weeks 1-3 and a second batch in weeks 4-7. This will allow for everyone to have two opportunities to create beautiful crystalline pieces, improving on the work from the first round.

    • 7 weeks of instruction for 2.5 hours each class. 17.5 hours total.

    • 25lbs Miller ^6 Porcelain for every student

    • Communal catcher clay (^5 b-mix)

Adam Abraham

Adam Abraham is a multi-disciplinary artist born and raised in Southern California working primarily in clay. Prior to his experience with ceramics, Adam worked full-time in a fine art custom frame shop while drawing and painting for gallery exhibitions. While studying art history at Moorpark College with intent to enter the field of art conservation and restoration, he first began his journey into clay while taking an elective ceramics class in spring of 2020, quickly falling in love with wheel-thrown pottery and decorative glazing techniques. Adam has been playing with the formulation and experimentation of mid-range crystalline glazes on and off since 2021, finding ways to employ them into both his functional and decorative work. He is a current BFA candidate in the ceramics program at Csulb, planning to complete his studies in the fall of next year.
