Day One - Glazing & Firing
Friday, April 1st
10am to 6pm

Participants (25) bring 8 to 10 bisqued pieces. Dimensions need to be within 8" × 8” x 8”. Ex. cups, mugs, bowls, teabowls, smaller vessels. Participants will fill our 54 cubic ft Geil kiln, along with Tom's pieces. Tom will demonstrate glazing techniques with our studio glazes. Techniques include brush decoration, pouring, layering, spraying, and more.

Clays that participants need to use for the workshop: Cone 10 Porcelain (clay will be provided)

Tom primarily works in porcelain and his glaze application techniques are specifically designed for those clay bodies.

Participants glaze their work with Tom and will also load the kiln with him. The kiln will start firing after everything is loaded. We aim to start firing by the late afternoon.

If time allows in Day 1, Tom will start his throwing demonstrations, which will continue into Day 2 and 3.

Day Two - Throwing & Making with Tom
Saturday, April 2nd
10am to 6pm

The kiln will be firing during the day. Tom will demonstrate and talk about his signature throwing techniques throughout the day. Tom will focus on throwing and altering large porcelain forms with slip decoration. In addition, he will make teabowls, cups, mugs, plates, bowls, and more. Participants will also work on the wheel with hands-on instruction from Tom and his wonderful assistant, Amy Kline.

The kiln will be fired off later in the day and will cool over night so it can be unloaded on Day 3.

Day Three - Finishing Thrown Forms, Kiln Unloading, & Discussion

Tom will finish and trim any forms he made during Day 2. This includes any alterations, cutting, and refining. Participants will continue throwing and finishing their pieces from Day 2.

The glaze firing will be unloaded towards the end of the day. All the pieces will be set out on a table and there will be a discussion, informal critique, and overview of the work.

Registration opens on Friday, February 25th at 12pm.
